Fed: New vehicle registrations surge 55.2 pc in = 2

Earlier this month, the federal Chamber of Automotive Industries said the number of
new vehicles sold in July was up 29.6 per cent compared with June, the worst month on

The 55.2 per cent rise announced today, in line with expectations, also provides financial
markets with their first indication of how consumers responded to the new tax system,
which began on July 1.

The largest previous increase in registrations was 22.8 per cent in December 1982.

The figures also show Toyota edged Holden out of the top spot for the first time in
12 months, outperforming its rival 13,781 to 12,969.

But Holden's Commodore/Calais remained the most popular model, with 7,590 new registrations
compared to Ford's Falcon/Fairmont on 6,704.
